Routine dental cleanings are important to maintaining good oral hygiene. A professional dental cleaning by our dental hygienist can remove plaque and calculus, that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. It is recommended by the American Dental Association, to have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined, once every six months.
How it's done:
You can expect your dental cleaning to last between 45 minutes and 1 hour. Most people find that dental cleanings are painless, and do not cause any discomfort. Susan, our registered dental hygienist, will perform the dental cleaning. She brings 25 years of dental experience and knowledge to our office, which will reassure you of the quality of care you will receive at your dental cleaning appointment.
There are two important steps to a dental cleaning. The first step is evaluating your gum tissue, to make sure your gum tissue is healthy. Once the gum tissue has been determined to be healthy, Susan will remove the plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces. This can be performed by hand scaling or with an ultrasonic scaler, depending on Susan's preference. Susan will also clean below the gum tissue to remove any plaque and calculus, that has accumulated there. The second step is to polish the teeth, using a polishing paste and a soft rubber cup, to remove any stain present on your teeth. This will make your teeth feel smooth and clean.
Dr. Baum will examine your teeth and review the dental x-rays for any signs of decay, faulty restorations, and any other dental issues, that might be present.
